A special feature of the island is the salt lake and spectacular dive sites such as, Meno Wall, Sea Turtle Point, and Blue Coral Point. The beach on eastern part of the island is very nice and there’s snorkeling just offshore and further north.

In the past Meno was known to have lots of mosquitoes but steps have been taken to control it. Still the best time to visit the island is during dry season.

The Sunset Gecko Bungalows located Off the coast of Lombok, on a nearly-deserted isle of Gili Meno.

This ecofriendly, Japanese-owned place is situated on a fantastic spot on the island’s northeast coast. Its isolated position means you get a front seat to the island’s most stunning sunsets. The small A-frame rooms and two-bedroom wooden house are simply furnished and adorned with ikat fabrics.

Don’t be put off by the communal washrooms, as they are clean and beautifully designed with environmentally friendly soap. The food needs improving, at the time of our visit, but the position of its comfortable oceanfront bales make up for it.

Away from the noisy, clogged and polluted city streets, one can warm their tired feet on sun-baked sand, swim above coral reefs and laze in a bale bengong (stilted open-air wooden hut) with a good book while feeling the delicious sea breeze against their skin. Looking up, instead of a hazy gray sky, one can see the blue of the sky during the day or the twinkling stars at night.

Some 30 kilometers east of the tourist island of Bali, Gili Meno is the smallest of the three small sand islands northwest of Lombok, in West Nusa Tenggara.

Situated on the beach, the resort has a number of small cottages and a main building for dining and the kitchen. The small resort boasts a beautiful garden, with blossoming plants and banana trees. Four comfy bale bengong look over the sea and Gili Trawangan with its tall telecommunications tower.

A Japanese man in his early 40s Hiro Tanaka, who we later found out was the owner of the place, greeted us. After we checked in, we made ourselves comfortable in the shady huts looking out to the sea.

The resort recycles the water from the dishwashing, laundry, and showers to water the plants. Hiro says that they used a three-step filtration system he learned from reading books and internet sites. He mixed the organic solid residue and organic waste from the kitchen to make compost.

Sunset gecko also makes natural soap in the kitchen. This too he learned from books and the internet. He uses palm and coconut oils for the soap and leaves it to harden as soap bars for six weeks. The soap was one of the highlights of the resort for me. It didn’t leave the skin dry and was even great when I used it to wash my hair.

Apparently, the news of the natural soap from Sunset Gecko has traveled around. Two Japanese women that stayed at Gili Trawangan traveled to Gili Meno to purchase the soap.

Sunset Gecko has a friendly atmosphere with guests greeting each other and sharing their latest experience in the water. Just dipping to waters in front of the beach of the resort will lead you to nice coral reef and sightings of beautiful sea creatures.

Sea turtles with their ancient look swim around the sea. One guests says that he went snorkeling and saw a Manta ray.

As the sun sets, the sky turns into a purplish color. Guests would hang around the open air dining room with drinks chatting, while sounds of geckos joining the chatter.

As the night grows late, the sight of Trawangan with its colorful lights looked like a big ship. A staff commented that it looked like the Titanic ship.
The best part was lying in a wooden beach chair and looking up to the sky. The stars twinkling and I started to fall asleep.

GILI MENO ISLAND
The Gili Islands are three small Islands just of the northwestern coast of mainland Lombok. Gili Meno is the middle island and by far the most quiet – with fewer hotels. As such, it is the ideal place to visit when wishing to get away from the crowd.

Mallias Child Bungalows is situated on the South East Corner of the small island of Gili Meno. The picturesque white sand beach in front of Mallias is very popular with sun worshippers, swimmers, and children. Great Diving and Snorkeling! A perfect escape for honeymooners or someone who wants to get away from it all.

Beach Front Bungalows:
Accommodation is literally right on the beach. This is a luxury that can not usually be experienced in a tourist area. Fresh water showers (cold) are in every Bungalow.

To allow this unique experience the bungalows, by definition, must be “transportable” or “temporary.” The traditional on-stilts, thatched-roof (alang alang) bungalows offer convection current natural air circulation which takes full advantage of the soothing sea breeze.

Australian Sulawesi Large Villa:
The Australian Designed Sulawesi constructed villa is made from a North Sulawesi variety of Iron Wood locally known as Wulus, and has full Government Certification. The Thatched Grass roof is Bali Style made in Lombok with good quality Alang Alang grass.

Total Area is 141 square metres with a large bedroom, lounge living room, and extensive front and side verandahs. Cooling is largely by air flow convection, with the aid of fans and an air conditioning unit.

The Villa is furnished and has facilities of TV, cooking range, dining areas, Bar, sofas that can be used as extra bedding for extra guests and children.

As at August 2009 the villa is almost completed and is planned to be completed by October 2009.

The French Villa:
The French Villa is located one kilometer north of the Mallas Child Resort in a Coconut Palm Tree Plantation set back one hundred and fifty metres from the white sand coral reef beach reached along a public private path.

The villa, designed by the original owner Ms Lorin, a French National, is two levels, concrete and wood construction, with one hundred and eighty square metres floor space, is set in one hectare of garden plantation land with two additional staff bungalows. The villa has two upstairs bedrooms fully ventilated and cool, with connecting bathrooms below. Ground Floor level has a twin bed bedroom, a large open living area and basic cooking facilities.

This French Villa, was intended to be made into a Health retreat, while available for rent, is surplus to the Mallias Beachside Resort Plan and is offered for full or part sale with Freehold Title (Hak Milik). Tao Kombo:
Tao Kombo can be contacted by their own website, and is not owned or connected to Mallas but is a friendly adjoining neighbour. Tao Kombo is a 5 villa complex and Jungle Bar set in a Cemara Pine Tree plantation and native garden.

The villas are simple, cool, concrete base, stone floor and wood bamboo roof structure with thatched roof of alang-alang grass.

Tao Kombo has as its patron a French musician, Phillipe and the cosmopolitan Jungle Bar has almost a Bohemian Character. Every few weeks as part of the Tao Kombo Indigenous Music and Dance Program, local musicians from all the Gili Islands look forward to performing at the Tao Kombo Jungle Bar.

A public phone is available close-by and calls can be received at the hotel. Mobile Phone coverage is reliable on the Gili islands.

The Restaurant
A very effective wood fired oven helps turn out some of the best pizzas around. An array of Indonesian and western inspired dishes is of consistently good quality. Fresh salads and fresh fruit nearly always available.

Cold drinks and cold beer are mandatory on the menu. Talk to the staff and seek compensation, if the drinks do not meet the claim. Bottled drinking water & mixers for most Spirits are available.

What’s good at Mallias
Besides the wholesome food and cool drinks there is the best white sand beach and good coral and lots of coloured fish. The sunrise over Mount Rinjani filtering through the Cemara trees direct to your bungalow is worth seeing around 6am. The locals can offer you support activities of fishing, diving, discos on the next island and lunch at the Oberoi is a close boat ride away by and you can splurge all the money you have saved by staying at Mallias – on lunch. Masks, snorkels & fins can be hired.

Biru Meno Bungalows is a backpackers choice located in the south east beach of Gili Meno.

The small bungalow resort Biru Meno is a unique spot for the individual traveller on the look out for a place to stay off the beaten track.

Biru Meno is situated directly by the sea on the southeastern coastline of Gili Meno. It consists of 8 beautiful bungalows, a restaurant and a breakfast area right on the shore.

If you manage to get up for sunrise, you will be able to see the majestic Gunung Rinjani, a 4000 meter high volcano on the mainland of Lombok. The large bathrooms are fitted with showers (cold water only) and Western style toilets. There is no fresh water on Gili Meno. So Biru Meno has its own small well that supplies the bungalows with fresh salty water that is good for your skin.

The open terraced restaurant is a very nice place where you can enjoy delicious Indonesien food or just have a drink or cocktail in the evening. The lovely staff are always up for a card or chess game, guitar music by the bonfire on the beach or just a good talk.

In Biru Meno you will also find a bookshelf where you can borrow or exchange books. You may also have a relaxing massage directly on the beach and do the most amazing star gazing at night.
